College grants are awards given from a federal company in order to assist you to pay for the tuition, and the great thing concerning them is that they do not have to be repaid. Nobody wishes to turn down their free money paying for their books and tuition!
Actually, there are a couple of grant types:
1) Direct grants are grants in that you turn to the federal government;
2) Pass-through grants are grants in that the state turns to the federal government, then the government gets the grant, and it is returned to the state.
About 1,000 grant programs are provided by 26 federal companies like the Department of Education.
Next, Pell Grants are the very popular and widely distributed grants. They are given to undergraduates enrolled in a particular degree program, still they are sometimes granted to the students enrolled in graduate teacher certification programs.
Besides the Pell Grant, you can also find three major federal grant options:
1. The FSEOG (Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant) – a Federal grant awarded to low-budget undergraduate students in order to assist them in continuing onto graduate school.
2. The National SMART Grant (National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant) – a Federal grant offered to seniors and juniors majoring in computer, life or physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, technology, or in a foreign language considered critically significant to national security.
3. The ACG (Academic Competitiveness Grant) – a Federal grant offered to sophomore and freshmen undergraduate students.
