A lot of people are eager to go to a well-recognized university, but don’t have enough money to do it. Getting a scholarship is a good option for working hard for another year or two to earn it.

There are three main groups of scholarships

Merit-based. A student may get it depending on his or her athletic, academic, artistic or some other abilities. Though the sum of money provided may not be enough, the main target of this scholarship is to motivate the student and promote the study of the discipline. Though, this is not a rule and the biggest scholarships are most of the time merit-based.

Need-based. Normally such scholarship covers the whole tuition or part of it, and sometimes even covers living-expenses. Quite often to get a need-based private scholarships one needs to be a distinguished student.

Ethnicity-based. A kind of financial awarded to applicants qualified by their race, religion, or national origin. After choosing the applicants based on their ethnicity, some other factors are considered to determine the final winners.

2. Scholarship Programs

The advantages of a scholarship are clear – once you receive the money to pay for your education, you don’t have to pay it back. A lot of these programs offer money and other privileges for students. These are given usually by charitable institutions (e.g. religious ones), company businesses, schools, universities, government and non-government (private) organizations. Financial support is given according to the criteria imposed by these institutions. The two most common types are academic and athletic scholarships.

3. Free Money

It sometimes happens that you can see an advertisement on the bus or in the paper and be awarded a scholarship. The money suggested is usually quite small - under $300, but it also helps. The best way to find some information about scholarships is to ask your school student advisor. Sometimes schools might have a student financial advisor.

4. Keep On Searching

One may sometimes sign up for several hundred scholarships before he is given one. It means that you should never give in. Though you must leave a lot of time for looking for scholarships, as it sometimes takes several months to approve one. So you shouldn’t start your search of scholarships just before you send your documents to a university.
